A Study on the Status of Parasitic Infection in Rural Children

Abstract
This study was conducted to find out the status of parasitic infection and its cause in rural infants and chidren. The survey area for this study was a rural area in Pocheon-gun, Kyung gi-do, where the infection rates of the general inhavitants with Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichocephalus trichiurus, Ancylostoma duodenale, Trichostrongylus orientalis and others are relatively high.
The survey subjects of infants and children were those of 1-48 months old who had no previous experience of receiving any kind of anthelmintics. The total number of subjects was 615. Stool examination of the subjects was carried out by means of zinc sulfate centrifugal flotation technique. T he status of activity development, feeding and habits of the infants and chidren were surveyed by means of home to determine a relationship with Ascaris infection.
As a result of the stool examinastion of the subjects(total number: 615) the infection rates, as a whole, were Ascaris lumbricoides 42.8%, Trichocephalus trichiurus 1.6% and Enterobius vermicularis 0.9%, but hookworm and other kinds of helminths were not detected.
Ascaris infection was observed in a 3-month old infant as the lowest aged. Ascris infection rates by age groups were as follows: 3.4% in 1-6 months group, 6.2% in 7-12 months group, 26.2% in 13-24 months group, 59.0% in 39-48 months group. Sex difference of Ascaris infection was not oberved.
Ascaris infection could be observed in the infants who were in stage of lay-down (as a developmental stage activity) with the rate of 3.7%(4 out of 106). The more developed a stage of activity proceeded. such as toward creeping, walking and running stages, the more the rates of Ascaris infection increased.
Ascaris infection could be observed in the infants who were fed only with breast milk with the rate of 5.6% (7 out of 126). The cause of this kind of infection is considered to be due to the contaminated room kust. Many children were observed to begin eating Kimchi (pickled vegetable) from the age of one and a half years old and Ascaris infections were observed to be increased highly after this age. Thus the eating Kimchi was considered to be an important cause of Ascaris infection.
The habit of children playing with field soil was also observed to be a significant cause of Ascaris infection.
